On January 2, Germany’s energy regulator, the Federal Network Authority, said that the country’s electricity generation from renewable energy sources, such as wind, water, solar, and biomass, accounted for more than half of its electricity generation in 2023, the country’s energy regulator, the Federal Network Authority, said.
Germany’s 2023 renewable energy generation share was 56%, DPA reported, citing data from the Federal Network Authority. This compares with 47.4 percent in 2022.

Specifically, Germany’s hydroelectric power generation in 2023 is 16.5% higher than in 2022, mainly due to the country’s higher rainfall in 2023, compared with a drought in 2022; onshore wind generation is 18% higher year-on-year, thanks to the installation of more wind power facilities; offshore wind generation is lower year-on-year because several offshore wind power generation facilities, as well as transmission lines, are undergoing repair and maintenance; Solar power generation is roughly unchanged from 2022, due to a relative lack of sunshine in 2023 despite an increase in installed capacity; power generation from biomass and other renewable energy sources decreases.
Significant reductions in coal and nuclear power generation in 2023 in Germany, whose last three nuclear power plants were shut down in April of the same year. Germany plans to generate 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
