European Photovoltaic Industry Association: EU PV industry to grow to 1 million employees by 2025

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) has released a report titled “Employment in the EU Photovoltaic Industry 2023”. The organization predicts that by 2025, the number of employees in the European PV industry will grow to one million.

The report said that by the end of 2022, there were 648,000 workers in the EU PV industry, a 39% increase compared to the previous year. Poland’s PV industry has the largest number of employees, nearly 150,000 at the end of last year, followed by Spain and Germany.

Jobs in installing PV systems will continue to dominate the PV industry, accounting for 84 percent of the total workforce, the report said.

The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) said:- “About 8% of jobs are related to the operation and maintenance of PV systems, while jobs related to the manufacture of PV modules account for 7% and jobs related to the decommissioning and recycling of PV systems account for 1%.”

The demand for installed PV systems is driving the need for more labor. After the installation of a PV system, the number of workers for operation and maintenance is small. On the other hand, PV inverter manufacturing employs the most workers in Europe, thanks to the wide presence of inverter companies, including many global market players.

According to the report, 2022 is a critical year, as jobs in PV system operations and maintenance outnumber those in PV module manufacturing. This reflects the difference between the rate of installation of PV systems and the slow expansion of the local supply chain.

As the PV industry grows, there is a need to train and educate employees. The report makes a number of policy recommendations to develop a more qualified workforce. These recommendations include developing awareness and education campaigns about green collar jobs, providing professional training for relevant professionals, promoting free movement of workers within the EU while ensuring cross-border recognition of job skills, and integrating the PV industry’s workforce needs into existing immigration policies.

The number of employees in the EU PV industry is expected to increase to 1.2 million by 2027, according to data and models collected by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) in its Global Market Outlook Report 2023-2027, released in June this year.
