Compared to the first quarter of this year, the average price of a single-family residential rooftop PV system in Germany rose by around 10% to €1,557 ($1,711)/kW in the second quarter of 2023, 21.9% higher than in the second quarter of 2022, when it was €1,277/kW.
Although module prices are currently falling on the international market, there is no reason to delay investment decisions in the expectation that prices will become cheaper.
Finn Bee, an analyst at EUPD Research, says: “We do not expect system prices for smaller systems to fall significantly in the coming months.” Yet only 28 per cent of installers, when asked directly, said prices had risen. “Last year it was over 90% at times.”
Common reference values for single-family residential PV systems are 10 kW solar and 10 kWh battery storage systems. In a survey of 100 installers, EUPD Research found that prices for such systems ranged from €18,500 to €45,500, the reason the values varied so much is that this was calculated by adding up the minimum and maximum values for storage and solar systems in the size classes below and above 10 kW. The average price is also not a very meaningful indicator when comparing it to a particular offer; instead, these figures are best used to determine price trends.
The actual price depends to a large extent on the installation environment and a number of other aspects, such as whether a new meter is required, the specific choice of components, the functionality of the system, and whether one or several inverters are installed. The region in which the house is located also has an impact.
Bee says: “Prices can vary by up to 20 per cent from region to region.”
Of course the origin of the product and the type of guarantee also varies. Particularly in the last year, many previously unknown Chinese manufacturers have entered the market with cheap battery storage devices and as a result the minimum price has fallen, but the average and maximum price has risen.
In the case of solar modules, the price depends on factors such as efficiency, with higher efficiency modules requiring less space and producing more electricity on the same roof area for the same output power, which of course comes with an additional cost.
